Lom-Pangar Hydroelectric Power Generation Plant
Construction works for the 30 megawatts Lom-Pangar Hydroelectric Dam project in the Belabo sub-division of the East Region has officially been launched. . The dam is expected to provide energy to approximately 150 localities across 10 000 households with an estimated beneficiary population of 50 000 people.
According to the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwume Ayodeji Adesina the project will not only supply electricity to Belabo but the entire East Region.

It is expected that the hydropower project will supply electrical power to the East Region, which is currently being supplied by a thermal plant. Regarding the energy mix in Cameroon, it is largely dominated by hydroelectricity, from which 73.3% of the national production is officially generated. Thermal power represents just over 25% against barely 1% for solar power, biomass and wind power all combined. [Source]
The $68 million project is being financed by the AfDB and the Development Bank of Central African States, with the AfDB providing $52 million. The entire project is projected to be completed within 30 months. [Source]
The power generation plant constitutes the second phase of the Lom-Pangar reservoir dam which has a capacity to supply six billion cubic metres of water to the Sanaga for the Songloulou dam.
According to media, Adesina said the continental bank will invest around $12 billion towards electricity projects over the next five years in Africa.. He further stated that the “AfDB will be implicated in all energy projects in Cameroon,” citing projects such as the Nachtigal dam, Kribi and Dibamba power plants amongst others which will aim to connect 500,000 households in 2017.
