In a nutshell, EPCM jobs involve engineering, procurement and construction management duties.
Across Africa’s Construction Industry we are seeing a significant rise in the number of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) based operations. The EPC phase of a project, also referred to as the execution phase, is usually followed by the Front End Engineering Design phase. Mostly speaking, an EPC project is controlled by the contractor and it is therefore the contractor who is liable for any project related risks, not the owner.
Engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) based projects are different to EPC projects in the following two ways:
- The project owner contracts other companies who provide construction services usually managed by the EPCM contractor on the Owner’s behalf.
- EPCM projects are largely managed by the owner and therefore is liable for any risks.
